Tour is a pretty broad word. Basically the hippy sub-culture is a transient group of migrant youth who travel the country under the guises of different events.
One of these is tour. There are many different types of tour: Phish, Grateful Dead, String Cheese Incident, Widespread Panic, etc..
These are all different "Jam Bands". Hippy kids love this style of music.
So, they'll travel around the country following these bands. They are not groupies, or roadies. They do not work for the band. They go from venue to venue setting up vending, selling illegal substances, or whatever else they need to do to get by. They make money working in the parking lots of these venues in order to get from show to show.
